Why Comply?
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) is Law. Many companies do not realise until it’s too late that not complying with the DDA can be costly, not just in legal fees but also in claims such as compensation awards for “hurt feelings”. For some organisations and businesses there is also the added cost and consequential damage to their reputation and corporate social responsibility.
- Disability discrimination laws have been used since 2003
- More than 15,000 disability-related claims have been registered with employment tribunals
- Compensation awards of up to £140,000 were made to successful claimants during 2005/06
- Many businesses have found that meeting their duties under the DDA has been possible with some simple and low-cost adjustments
- Money could be available to cover most employment costs resulting from an employee's disability
