The Disability Timeline - Important Dates
November 1995
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 receives Royal Assent.
December 1996
DDA Part 2 - It is unlawful for any employers with 20 or more employees to discriminate against disabled employees. This covers disability related discrimination and a failure to make reasonable adjustments
DDA Part 3 – It is unlawful for service providers to treat disabled people less favourably for reasons relating to their disability.
April 2000
The DRC (Disability Rights Commission) opens for business.
September 2002
DDA Part 4 - Schools, colleges, universities and providers of adult education and youth services are required to ensure they do not discriminate against disabled people.
October 2004
DDA Part 2 - Extended to cover all employers (with the exception of the armed forces) regardless of number of employees.
DDA Part 3 – Service providers must make reasonable adjustments to physical features of their premises to overcome barriers to access, or provide a reasonable means of avoiding them.
April 2005
The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 receives Royal Assent. This includes a number of developments on the DDA 1995.
October 2007
The Commission for Equality and Human Rights is formed, covering the Disability Rights Commission (DRC), Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) which are subsequently dissolved.
