Progression of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

November 1995 - DDA 1995 received Royal Assent

December 1996 - DDA 1995 Parts 1 & 2 came into force making it unlawful for employers and service providers to discriminate against disabled people.

December 1999 - Rights of Access to Goods and Services (DDA 1995 part 3) came into force.

April 2000 the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) opens for business. 

In 2001 the SENDA Act was passed. Consequently, in September 2002 the DDA 1995 was extended to schools, colleges, universities and providers of adult education and youth services(DDA Part 4).

September 2003 - requirement to provide auxiliary aids and services came into force.

October 2004 - requirement to make reasonable adjustments to physical features came into force and the exemption for small employers was removed.

April 2005 - the DDA 2005 receives Royal Assent. This includes a number of developments on the DDA 1995.

September 2005 - physical access provisions for schools came into force.

December 2005 - definition of disability changed for MH, MS, HIV and Cancer.

December 2006 - Disability Equality Duty (DED) came into force.

October 2007 - formation of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights
